This week, the folks at GOG have a set of four games available for free download for a short time. Included in the mix are Ultima Underworld I, Ultima Underworld II, Syndicate Plus and Syndicate Wars. Chances are you’ve never heard of ‘Ultima’ before – don’t worry! We’re going to take a look at these games here and see what they’re all about.
The games we are reviewing today are old school. If you’ve been looking for a game bundle that takes you back to the glory days of early / mid-90s PC gameplay, this is what you need. First, take a look at some actions with Syndicate Plus.
Next, we’ll take a look at some of the points and clicks included with Syndicate Wars. If you were playing Syndicate Plus in 1994 and wanted to take it to the next level in 1996, it was computer science. We’re talking semi-3D gameplay, flying vehicles, and nonsense galore.
If you want to go back, WAY back, to the origins of first person shooter, adventure games and the slaughter of dragons on your home computer, Ultima Underworld was what you needed. We’re talking about 1992, before Wolfenstein 3D, before the first DOOM.
Fast forward to the year 1993 and Ultima Underworld II revamped the game in a familiar, yet drastic way. If you find yourself destroying the first game in a matter of hours, this one is ready to go – with only a TINY learning curve to deal with between games.
NOTE: As is usually the case with free platform games, you will need an account to access the GOG site. In this case, it means a little more than signing up with an email and the password you want to choose. Once you’ve done that, GOG allows the games to be downloaded directly.
