The urge to gamble occurs at different times of the day, and the Xbox Series X is poised to make it easier for people who want to play at more unsociable hours. Because he is publicly testing a new ‘Night Mode’.
The idea is that night mode will make the game much more comfortable after dark. That means more dimmable screens and hardware lights, plus an optional blue light filter to help reduce eye strain.
But while a public test is underway, it is not open to everyone. Only Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring can participate. However, it seems that those with access to the new feature are getting a lot of customization so that they can tailor the night mode to their needs.
According to a video by Tom Warren of The Verge, Night Mode can be found in an Xbox’s settings menu, under the preferences tab. Once there, users have almost total control over what goes on. The night mode itself can be toggled manually or you can set it to activate on a schedule. Like the blue light filter on some phones, this can be configured to occur at set times or based on the bed / wake cycle.
Night mode also lets you control the brightness of your screen and the amount of filtered blue light, with a sliding scale. Users can also block HDR and dim the amount of light emitted by the console power button and Xbox controller home button.
In theory, this could also allow you to turn off the light on both pieces of Xbox hardware all the time, even if you don’t change the actual look of the picture on your TV.
The only thing night mode doesn’t do is turn down the volume on your TV, which can be useful to take into account that people in nearby rooms or apartments may be sleeping.
Of course, night mode is not yet a stable feature, and it is likely that various changes will occur during the various stages of testing. We still hope that most of the current features will stay in place and roll out as a feature for everyone.
We already have similar functionality on phones and PCs, and it’s time for consoles to jump into this action as well. Hopefully the Xbox testing means the PS5 will get into the action as well, and maybe even Nintendo Switch.
