PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Some deer in several states, including Pennsylvania, have tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

A study by the United States Department of Agriculture showed that some populations of wild white-tailed deer in Illinois, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania were exposed to SARS-CoV-2.

Of the nearly 500 samples collected between January 2020 and March 2021, COVID-19 antibodies were detected in 33%.
The Agriculture Department says it does not know how deer were exposed to COVID-19, whether through people, the environment, other deer, or another animal. No clinical disease was reported in any of the deer populations studied.

Researchers say there is no evidence that animals, including deer, play a significant role in the spread of COVID-19 to humans.
