JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Oregon – Josephine County Public Health is calling for renewed vigilance over Covid-19, urging people to get vaccinated, wear masks and socially distance themselves as the virus puts people in ‘different ages in the hospital.
Josephine County Public Health Assistant Health Officer Dr Leona O’Keefe said young people in the county are less likely to get the vaccine because they don’t think the disease will be as serious.
“In order to protect hospital resources and open up all these hospital beds for everyone, we really need to work as a whole community, as a whole neighborhood on this topic. We need people to get vaccinated, this is the number one and most powerful tool we have to prevent Covid disease which is serious in the first place. “
O’Keefe says that because the Delta variant is highly transmissible, she still urges people to wear their masks to limit the spread of Covid-19.
From pre-teens to 90-year-olds, different age groups have been transported out of Josephine County to get the best possible care. O’Keefe said it wasn’t because the Delta variant favors younger age groups, but rather a reflection of the vaccination rate in Josephine County.
“The older the age group, the higher the vaccination rate and the higher the vaccination rate, the better the protection against the disease. Delta being so much more transmissible, it hits really hard the groups of people who aren’t as well vaccinated, and those are the younger groups. “
Josephine County has reported groundbreaking cases of Covid-19, which means fully vaccinated people contract the virus.
“It doesn’t mean the vaccines don’t work. We all anticipated there would be groundbreaking cases. What we are still seeing are people who have been vaccinated and hospitalized with Covid-19, most of them not. vaccinated. “
The Oregon Health Authority reported that as of July, 81% of cases in Oregon were from unvaccinated people. Among the deaths from Covid-19, 91% of them also concerned unvaccinated people.
“People who tend to die from Covid-19 even though they are fully vaccinated are usually elderly and have serious underlying conditions. We are not seeing younger, healthier, fully vaccinated people die from Covid-19. “
Josephine County Public Health says they have pop-up vaccination booths at as many community events as possible. Every Saturday at the Grower’s Market, a vaccine stand is available and the public health department will be offering free vaccinations each day of the Josephine County Fair.
O’Keefe says the booth goes beyond offering vaccinations. It is also extending conversations about Covid-19 and the vaccine to clear up some of their concerns.
Each person who receives a single dose of Josephine County Public Health will also receive a $ 25 gift card to support people who make an effort to get vaccinated.
The phone number (541) 916-7030 can be used to organize transportation to vaccines, schedule appointments or find out where immunization opportunities are located.
