An overview of COVID vaccination rates of Michigan teens ahead of the school year

Just weeks before the start of the 2021-2022 school year in Michigan, only 37.8% of teens received a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Latest MDHHS data shows Michigan residents aged 12 to 19 lag far behind older age groups in COVID-19 vaccination rates, though many are preparing to return to in-person learning this fall.

As of August 9, here are some of the 1+ dose rates for the 12-19 age group in Michigan:

• Detroit: 20%

• Wayne Co. (without Detroit): 46%

• Cie Macomb: 36%

• Oakland Co.: 54%

• Washtenaw Co.: 50%

• Sainte-Claire Company: 27%

• Cie Livingston: 41%

• Lapeer Co.: 23%

• Monroe Company: 28.5%

• Lenawee Co.: 27.5%

• Genesee Company: 30%

• Cie Ingham: 37%

• Saginaw Company: 30%

• Kent Company: 45.9%

Statewide, about 64.2% of residents 16 and older have at least one dose, and over 80% of those 65 and older have at least one dose.

Cases of COVID-19 have increased in Michigan, but not as much as in other states like Florida in Texas. Most Michigan school districts plan to offer in-person learning this fall, and most have decided not to require masks or mandatory vaccines for staff. The CDC has recommended universal masks for all schools, and MDHHS did the same.
