Tuesday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 1,690 new cases and seven newly reported deaths, although the numbers are inflated as it is a three-day cumulative (Saturday , Sunday and Monday).
The death toll in the state is 7,705 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 58.8% (4,528) were long-term care residents.
As of August 5, the state reported that 3,214,610 (an increase of more than 15,000 from Monday’s report, although this is also three days of total) people have received at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 3,025,683 people completed their vaccine series. The percentage of the population of Minnesota who received at least one injection, by age group:
- 12-15: 45%
- 16-17: 54%
- 18-49: 60%
- 50-64: 73%
- 65+: 92%
- Total population: 58%
54.4% of the total population of Minnesota, including children under 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine, have completed the vaccine series. This rises to 64.3% excluding children under 12. MDH has a public dashboard for tracking vaccination progress in Minnesota, and you can view it here.
Hospitalizations
As of August 9, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 333 (up from 299 reported on Monday).
Of those hospitalized, 92 were in intensive care and 241 were receiving non-ICU treatment. This is the highest level of hospitalizations linked to COVID-19 since May 24 and 25.
Tests and positivity rate.
The 1,690 positive results in Tuesday’s update came from 52,379 completed tests, creating a test positivity rate of 3.22%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 5.37%, which increases as the Delta variant spreads, having recently been below 1%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total tests performed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is necessary to keep the economy open and safe. This 5% cutoff is based on the total number of positives divided by the total number of tests.

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is considered less accurate than the more common PCR test.
