Martian rock mysteriously disappears, baffling NASA scientists

NASA’s Perseverance rover only had one job, and it failed. But true to its name, the rover will try, try again to extract a rock from the surface of Mars.

“While this is not the ‘hole in one’ we were hoping for, there is always risk to innovate,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Missions Directorate in Washington, in a press release. “I am confident that we have the right team to work on this, and we will push for a solution to ensure future success.”

The rover is equipped with a hollow drill bit and a hammer drill at the end of its 7-foot-long robotic arm. All indications showed that the sampling attempt was successful, until the rover returned with an empty sample tube.

NASA researchers believe the rocky target probably didn’t react as expected and are analyzing existing data to figure out what went wrong.

“I’ve been on all of the rover’s missions to Mars since the start, and this planet is still teaching us what we don’t know about it,” Jennifer Trosper, Project Manager for Perseverance at JPL, said in the statement. . “One thing I have found is that it is not uncommon to have complications with complex activities for the first time.”
