A Humboldt County resident in his 60s has died with COVID-19, bringing the number of residents who have died with the virus to 57. Staff at the Departmental Operations Center extend their condolences to the person’s family, friends and caregivers and to anyone who has lost someone to the virus.
Ninety-one new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Humboldt County today. The total number of county residents who have tested positive for the virus now stands at 5,808.
Six new hospitalizations were also reported, including one in their forties, two in their fifties and three in their sixties.
Anyone with known exposure to the virus should quarantine themselves for 10 to 14 days and only test if they have symptoms or three to five days after exposure. Those with symptoms who have been told to be tested by a healthcare professional should get tested as soon as possible. For more information on what to do while waiting for test results, see humboldtgov.org/DocumentCenter/View/96074/After-Your-COVID-Test-PDF.
Most of those who contract the virus can be treated at home, taking care not to infect others. Anyone who tests positive is required by order of the Humboldt County health worker to self-isolate in their home for 10 days from the date of their positive test or the onset of symptoms. After this period, they can be released from isolation when at least 24 hours have passed without fever or worsening symptoms. Resources for infected people and caregivers can be found at humboldtgov.org/blanketorders.
In addition to isolating themselves, people who test positive should rest, stay hydrated, and treat their symptoms, which may include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, body aches, sore throat, nose that runny, headache, diarrhea or vomiting. For home treatment of specific symptoms and tips on how to protect other household members, see humboldtgov.org/DocumentCenter/View/88490/Caring-for-a-sick-person-at-home.
People with COVID-positive should see a doctor if emergency warning signs develop, including a fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, confusion, or an inability to wake up . These symptoms can indicate complications such as severe pneumonia, which can lead to acute respiratory distress. Notify the 911 operator or emergency facility that the person seeking care has or may have COVID-19.
