SC reports 2,204 new cases of COVID-19, 11 deaths on Tuesday

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 1,954 new confirmed cases and 250 probable new cases of the virus for a total of 2,204. These figures are correct as of August 8.

The difference between confirmed and probable cases is based on the type of test a person receives. The probable cases are treated as cases confirmed by the doctors, specifies the DHEC.

DHEC reported 11 new confirmed deaths and no probable new deaths.

DHEC is no longer giving a death date for these reports, saying it violates the privacy of the deceased due to the decrease in deaths from COVID-19 statewide.

The agency has also stopped sharing the age range of people who die from COVID-19 each day, but it publishes weekly reports with this information on Tuesday.

While new cases of COVID-19 were down in South Carolina in June, cases have been on the rise since mid-July.

The number of COVID-19 cases remains low from the winter outbreak, but the number of cases is increasing – reaching levels not seen in South Carolina since before the vaccine was readily available.

Hospitalizations in the state are also increasing, with dozens of new people hospitalized with COVID-19 every day. However, the total number of people hospitalized for COVID still represents about a third of the total number of hospitalizations in December and January.

As of August 8, DHEC reported that among South Carolina residents eligible for the vaccine:

• 52.8% received at least one vaccine – 2,269,881 people
• 45.3% are fully vaccinated – 1,944,360 people

PERCENTAGE OF POSITIVE TRACKING

Percentage positive refers to the number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 compared to the number of tests performed.

DHEC reports that the percentage of positive results from the 16,717 molecular tests that were most recently reported to them was 15.5% (not counting antibody tests).

COVID-19 HOSPITALIZATIONS

From Tuesday, the US Department of Health and Human Services says 79.11% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 79.4% of intensive care beds are in use.

There are 1,243 hospital patients who have COVID-19, HHS reported. Of these patients, 325 are in intensive care.

As of August 9, DHEC reported 1,932 ventilators available in the state, of which 532 are in service. COVID-19 patients represent 177 of them.

DHEC has a dashboard that indicates the number of cases of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 in South Carolina.

It also shows how much case of different variants were found as is, by type.

As of August 4, there have been 248 reported cases of the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 in South Carolina. However, health officials say there are likely many more cases of the delta variant in the state. DHEC only sends a random sample of positive tests to look for variants.
