One death from COVID-19 and 25 new cases of COVID in Tuolumne, 27 new cases in Calaveras

Sonora, California – Tuolumne County is reporting the death from COVID-19 of a man in his 60s who was recently hospitalized. Public health reports 23 new cases in the community and 2 new cases of Sierra Conservation Center inmates. There are 229 active cases of which 17 are hospitalized. Public health notes that an individual’s case has been transferred to their home jurisdiction and has been removed from Tuolumne’s case tally.

Tuolumne test The state test site, currently at Tuolumne Memorial Hall, will begin operations 7 days a week starting this Friday, August 13.^e, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The site is in the process of being relocated to the Mother Lode Exhibition Center in Sonora and is expected to start operating there on Wednesday August 18.^e.

The Tuolumne report continues The current total case rate, a 14-day moving average for Tuolumne County, is 47.8 per 100,000, as reported at the supervisory board meeting today, is double the rate average case in the state of California. The case rate for those vaccinated is 13.6 and for the unvaccinated is 71.8. Tuolumne County Health Director Michelle Jachetta said about 1/3 of Adventist Health Sonora beds are used by COVID patients, and that puts a strain on the local health system. The distribution by sex and by age for the 35 community cases is as follows: 1 woman and 1 man from 0 to 11 years old, 2 women and 3 men from 12 to 17 years old, 1 woman and 2 men from 18 to 29 years old, 1 woman and 1 man from 30 to 39 years old, 3 women and 1 man from 40 to 49 years old, 3 women and 1 man from 50 to 59 years old, 2 men from 60 to 69 years old and 1 woman from 80 to 89 years old.

Two of the new cases were vaccinated with Pfizer. Out of 706 cases, since June 15, when the first vaccinated individual was reported to have a Covid infection, 68 in total have been identified; 36 Moderna, 21 Pfizer, 5 J&J, 2 unidentified and 2 others partially vaccinated. Public health notes that 72% of vaccine doses administered by public health were Moderna vaccine. They state that “the small number of cases among vaccinated individuals does not necessarily demonstrate a lower level of protection from one vaccine over another.”

A total of 21,987 inhabitants of Tuolumne are fully vaccinated and 3,573 are partially vaccinated. The vaccination rate is 52% of those eligible for Tuolumne, those aged 12 and over.

The California Department of Corrections reports 89 active cases to the Sierra Conservation Center (SCC). A total of 68% of the 3,310 inmates managed by the prison, which includes all of the southern fire camps, are fully vaccinated and 1,470 inmate cases have been resolved. There were no deaths of detainees due to Coivd-19.

Calaveras County Public Health reports 27 new cases since yesterday, 123 active cases and three active hospitalizations. Three of the cases are aged 0 to 17 and there are six new cases in people 65 and older. Since the start of the pandemic, they have had 270 Covid-19 positive people aged 17 and under and 490 Covid-19 positive people aged 65 and over. Calaveras’ highest active cases peaked at 123 during the first wave of COVID-19 in December / January.

Mariposa Public Health reports 9 new cases, 71 active cases and four hospitalizations. Mariposa notes “Just 12 days ago we reported our 500th case. Today, they have 601 cases in total. The highest number of active cases of Mariposa compared to the previous outbreak was 54 on January 4.

Public Health continues to strongly encourage all eligible people to get vaccinated, as it is the most important step in reducing the spread of disease and preventing serious illness and death. The California Department of Public Health and the local county health department have issued masking guidelines for universal indoor masking, as detailed here. Public health said on August 9 that it had received 8 whole genome sequencing results from COVID test samples and all of the results were the Delta variant. No other details were disclosed.
