The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday that all of Connecticut and Massachusetts state counties are sites of high or substantial transmission of COVID-19.
The increase in transmission in both states reflects a national and regional trend.
Some health authorities recommend that vaccinated people resume wearing masks indoors in areas of high or significant transmission. This includes almost all of New England.
The CDC reported that every county in the six-state region was the site of high or substantial transmission on Sunday, with the exception of Orange County, Vermont, and Kennebec County, Maine.
In Connecticut, the counties of New London, New Haven, Middlesex, and Hartford were the site of high transmission and the other four counties in the state were classified as substantial. In Massachusetts, the counties of Suffolk, Nantucket, Dukes, Plymouth, Bristol, Essex, Hampden and Berkshire were the site of high transmission and the other six counties in the state were important.
New England continues to lead the nation in COVID-19 vaccine use, and Massachusetts is close to Vermont for the region’s highest rate.
About 74% of Massachusetts received a first dose of the vaccine. Only Vermont is higher at 75%. All six states are above 65%. The number nationwide if just under 60%.
The states of New England and Hawaii continue to have some of the highest vaccination rates in the country.
