Parents of 4 children die of COVID-19, last wish was for children to get vaccinated

Dottie Jones hopes she can soon make her cousin’s last wish come true.

“One of the last things she said before putting the ventilator on her sister was to get my kids vaccinated,” Jones told FOX 26.

Her cousin, Lydia Rodriguez, 42, died on Monday – just two weeks after her husband, Lawrence Rodriguez, 49. They both died from COVID-19.

Jones says the La Marque couple contracted COVID-19 in late June at a religious camp with their four children. Their children, 18-year-old twins, a 16-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, were also infected, but Jones describes their symptoms as mild.

Jones says Lydia and Lawrence didn’t believe in vaccines and were reluctant to seek treatment.

In mid-July, the couple were admitted to intensive care.

“They asked their doctor for the vaccine at the hospital, but they were told it was too late,” Jones said. “It was her choice and she paid a heavy price for it.”

Jones says the couple’s children are also paying the price.

The family loved music. Lydia was a piano teacher and loved to post videos of her boys leading church worship. It is a joy that they will never see again together.

“If history scares you, it should. It’s a horrible story. It’s heartbreaking,” Jones said.

Jones is a nurse practitioner at Lufkin. She says she tried to talk to Lydia about the importance and safety of vaccines. Jones is devastated that her cousin believed the disinformation online.

“She’s read a lot of the stuff you find on the internet about vaccines, in general, a lot of the anti-vax story,” she added.

Jones now believes it is her mission to share her cousin’s story in the hopes that she will spare another family the pain.

“I just want this misinformation that is spreading to be stopped. It’s just that we have to demystify it. We have to somehow communicate with people,” she stressed.

As for the couple’s children, Jones says, the younger two are moving in with a family member and they are all grappling with this unimaginable loss.
