JT Realmuto also went deep and Odubel Herrera was 4 for 5 with a homerun and three runs batted in to help the second-place Phillies stay five games behind Atlanta in the NL East. San Diego lost nine of 11 and lost one game to Cincinnati in the race for the NL’s second wild card. Gibson allowed one run and six hits.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Adam Wainwright allowed two hits in eight masterful innings and Paul Goldschmidt scored to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. The Cardinals snapped a two-game skid and prevented the Pirates from winning their first series sweep of the season. They remain the only team in the majors without one. Wainwright pitched 106 pitches and put out his last 11 batters. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 19 innings against the Pirates and has won his last seven decisions against them. The 39-year-old right-hander struck out nine batters and missed a goal improving to career 20-7 against Pittsburgh.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Jalen Hurts returned to training on Sunday, three days after the Philadelphia Eagles scratched the sophomore quarterback minutes before a preseason game against New England kicks off due to stomach disease. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Hurts also took part in a closed-to-media tour on Saturday. The team trained indoors on Sunday night after a public practice at Lincoln Financial Field was canceled due to rain. Sirianni said that Hurts “was just resting his body, like you would with any illness, and made a recovery. Recovering his body, and was obviously over there rocking it today at the coaching.
