The United States is on the point of rescuing on Monday some of the some 20,000 people awaiting evacuation from Kabul international airport, along with dozens of US military transport planes.
It comes after the Taliban took control of most of the Afghanistan last week, when many people now fear for their lives in the country.
According to CNN, there are plans to 33 US Air Force C-17 to fly to Hamid Karzai International Airport within 24 hours, each of the aircraft having the capacity to take 400 people out of Kabul. As such, it should go some way in helping the aforementioned 20,000 people to come out of Afghanistan.
US policy change
However, it should be noted that a source told CNN that the US government changes policy on who is allowed to enter airport, because it will only be US citizens, green card holders and citizens of NATO countries from this Monday.
This means that those who have applied for the Special U.S. Immigrant Visa (SIV), intended for Afghans who have assisted U.S. government forces and agencies to leave the country, will no longer be allowed into the airport.
Staff still high at the airport
Although there were 30,000 people leaving Kabul airport for the United States and other NATO countries since August 14, with a White House official claiming 5,000 people were evacuated in 12 hours on Sunday, the airport was still full of people looking for a way out of the country.
“I don’t know what they were doing, but there are always local staff fighting at the gates and can’t even get in,” a source told CNN in reference to Afghans employed by the United States.
There were also cases of families being sent to different countries.
“[It’s] It’s not really the fault of US officials, but they choose to either come separately or go their separate ways along the way, “the source added.
“They’ve had cases where mom, dad and kids all end up in different countries.”
