7,000 new COVID cases reported in VA since Friday

RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – The Virginia Department of Health is reporting 741,159 total cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth as of Monday, August 23, 2021, dating to the start of the pandemic in March 2020. That’s 7,080 more than the 734,079 reported on Friday.

NOTE: VDH now only updates cases and test dashboard from Monday to Friday.

According to the state’s latest vaccine scorecard update, 9,808,587 doses of vaccine were administered in Virginia on Monday, up from 9,761,485 reported on Friday. 63.1% of the state’s population received at least one dose, with 55.8% fully vaccinated. 75.1% of Virginians aged 18 and over have received at least one dose and 66.9% are fully vaccinated.

8,380,223 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests were performed in Virginia on Monday, with a 9.5% positivity rate from those tests over the past week, higher than the 9.1% reported on Friday.

As of Monday, 11,675 coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded in the Commonwealth since the start of the pandemic, compared to 11,647 reported on Friday.

1,364 people across Virginia were hospitalized on Monday with confirmed or pending cases of COVID-19, up from 1,265 reported on Friday. 59,706 COVID patients have been discharged from hospitals in Virginia since the start of the pandemic. That’s according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, which receives a daily report from Commonwealth hospitals.

These hospital numbers are different from those reported by VDH, which only collects hospitalization status when each case is reviewed by VDH and is an under-representation of hospitalizations in Virginia.

Any new cases confirmed by statewide health services the rest of the day will not appear until at least the next day on the state’s list, as official figures are only updated once a day. , with a cut-off at 5 p.m. each day for new cases to be on the list the next day.
