‘Spider-Man’ Mysterious Trailer Has Frenzied Fans – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) – How popular is Spider Man? So popular that fans were clamoring for a movie trailer that didn’t even exist.

The trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” – or a version of it – reportedly leaked online this weekend, sending millions of fans looking for all the news of the new film on social media. The film, the third Episode starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, hits theaters in December.

What the leaked trailer actually showed is hard to know as it has already been wiped from the internet. And Sony, the film’s studio, did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the leak, so there are still plenty of unknowns.

On Monday night, however, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” Twitter account released an official trailer.

The teaser itself matters less than the fervor which surrounds it. Attention is yet another prime example of Spider-Man’s popularity in the movies.

The Spider-Man franchise – which is currently shared between Sony and Disney’s Marvel studios – is one of the most popular brands in box office history, with more than $ 6.3 billion at the global box office, according to Comscore. This includes the last two Sony / Disney films – “Spider-Man: Homecoming” of 2017 and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” of 2019 – which grossed $ 880 million and $ 1.1 billion respectively worldwide. .

The character was instrumental in many ways in creating the era of blockbuster comics that Hollywood is experiencing today. 2002’s “Spider-Man”, which starred Tobey Maguire as the hero, broke box office records at the time before making more than $ 800 million worldwide. This film spawned two sequels before Sony replaced Maguire with Andrew Garfield in 2012.

Sony also found success with the 2018 animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, which grossed $ 375 million worldwide and won an Academy Award.

“No Way Home” is so eagerly awaited in part because there has been rumors that Maguire and Garfield could join Holland thanks to Marvel’s “multiverse” scenarios, which open the series to a multitude of characters and realities. These rumors were shot, but the cast of previous villains, such as Jamie Foxx’s Electro, has fans who remain hopeful.

Theater owners are also optimistic that “No Way Home” will be the type of blockbuster that can help them get back on their feet. The film is set to hit theaters on December 17 and could be the biggest blockbuster of the year. If so, it could not only make a ton of money, but also help the industry get started in 2022.

So, yes, there have been hits and misses so far this year at the box office, but if reaction to a briefly leaked trailer is any indication, the industry’s biggest hit isn’t has yet to hit theaters.
