In the week he was due to receive his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Jett Stanton returned a positive test. The next night he was in a hospital bed.
The 21-year-old semi-professional skateboarder from Liverpool, southwest Sydney, said he had “no idea” the virus – which he had tried to avoid in a hot area by staying at home – would affect it so drastically.

“I have no underlying physical condition. I eat healthy, I exercise, I do not consume alcohol and I do not smoke cigarettes, ”he told the Herald on Sunday.
“I can’t stress enough, no matter how healthy and young you are, you can’t predict how [COVID-19] will affect you.
Mr Stanton and his two roommates have now all tested positive for COVID-19, after his roommates were identified as close contacts of a case. His girlfriend, who was vaccinated, returned negative tests.
He entered the hospital Thursday evening after experiencing a persistent and painful cough, throbbing chest pain, nausea, fatigue, headache and cold sweats.
“I have never felt so uncomfortable before,” he said, adding that the diagnosis had also had a huge impact on his mental health.
After a recent panic attack, Mr Stanton said his body was so weak that he passed out for several minutes.
