Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano called the apparent drowning of a teenager on Monday morning in the town of “Tragic accident.”
The first responders were called to the jetty in the city of Dunkirk around 00:45 am to report a minor possibly in the water. Ortolano said two men entered the water east of the pier while only one got out.
The teenager who managed to get out is the one who called for help, the police chief confirmed. A search then ensued, with the county’s water emergency team, maritime units from the Sheriff’s Office and Chautauqua County EMS assisting local police and firefighters.
A body was found early in the morning and the man was later pronounced dead by a county coroner.
Ortolano said the incident was considered accidental drowning and noted the victim was a 16-year-old resident of the Dunkirk area. “All we know at this point is that we have received the call for a missing swimmer east of the town pier,” he added. he said of the initial call, later adding, “It’s just a tragic accident.”
Monday’s incident is the second such drowning involving a minor locally in recent days.
Pennsylvania State Police said they are still investigating an accidental drowning involving a 2-year-old girl on Saturday morning in neighboring Warren County. Soldiers had learned that a child had gone missing near Tidioute, Pa. Along the Allegheny River. It was determined that the 2-year-old girl – identified in her obituary as Izzy Rae Peterson – left her residence sometime before 11 a.m. and made her way to an area near the river.
The child allegedly fell into the water, which triggered a wide search involving several agencies. The girl’s body was found in a pile of debris by a relative on Sunday 1 mile south of where she was believed to have fallen into the river.
“The Warren County Coroner … determined that the cause of death was listed as accidental drowning,” Pennsylvania State Police said in a press release Sunday night. “The incident is still under investigation. “
