Born July 1, 1932 in Ardabil, Iran, one of three children of Morteza and Leila (Soltani) Shahbazi, Adam grew up helping his father with his Persian rug business. During his high school years, Adam was an avid soccer player and competitive swimmer. In 1955, Adam enrolled in an English course, where he met his English teacher, Ellen Chuck, an American living in Iran. The two formed a strong bond and fell in love. Ellen returned to the United States in 1956 to complete her studies at Syracuse University. Adam’s love for Ellen continued, and he immigrated to the United States in November 1957. Soon after, he began classes at the Indiana Institute of Technology (IIT) where he graduated from engineer. On June 19, 1959, Adam and Ellen got married on the back porch of Ellen’s family in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1961, Adam graduated from IIT. The couple moved to northwest Indiana, making their first home in Munster. Adam experienced two of the happiest times of his life in November 1961 and May 1963 with the birth of his sons, David and Daniel. As his family life blossomed, Adam became active in the community, joining the local Toast Masters International, where he proudly received the state’s humorous speech competition award. He was also a member of the Young Hammond Chamber of Commerce and helped his children mentor Cubs and Indian Guides. Adam’s first job was with the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) in Hammond, where he worked for 27 years, ten of which were spent designing a nuclear power plant. This project was very important to him and his career. He was also an Assistant Engineering Instructor at Purdue University Northwest. In 1988, Adam left NIPSCO to work at Sargent and Lundy, an engineering consulting firm in Chicago, IL.

Adam retired in 1995. He and Ellen moved to Sister Bay, WI, where he enjoyed golfing and spending time with Ellen. This period of his life was particularly enjoyable and enabled him to write a book documenting his life story, a project he had thought about for many years. He was guided in this endeavor by Barbara Larsen, who helped him realize his ambition and bring it to fruition.

Adam and Ellen’s retirement allowed them to travel to various places outside of the United States, spend more time with their children, enjoy their passion for golf at the Peninsula State Park Golf Course, and relax while playing. at bridge. Winters were spent in St. Augustine, Florida, where Adam enjoyed his brisk daily walks on Crescent Beach. In 2020, after spending 25 years in Door County, Adam and Ellen moved to Mill Creek Senior Living Community in Marquette, MI, to be closer to their family.

Adam is survived by his 62 year old wife, Ellen; his sons, David (Suzanne) Shahbazi of Marquette, MI and Daniel (Kathy) Shahbazi of Fishers, IN; her grandchildren, Jacob, Alexander, Sophie and Nicholas; his brother Abdollah (Roshan) from Tehran, Iran and several nieces and nephews.

Adam was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Shafi.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, Mill Creek Senior Living Community, and to Dr. Richard Hogan in Sturgeon Bay, WI for their compassionate and professional care and the many kindnesses bestowed upon them.

A private family celebration of the life of Adam will take place at a later date in Chicago and Door County.
