Olivia insisiengmay ’22 landed his dream internship.
She spent the summer of 2021 as a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual, where she worked with senior advisors to help clients achieve their financial goals. Like a major in business with a concentration in finance, it was the ideal solution for its own objectives.
“In an internship, you face real-life situations and connect with people on a more personal level,” she said. “It’s not just about helping myself and my learning, but also helping the people I care about.
This connection between classroom learning and real-life situations began years earlier. During Insisiengmay’s first year at Hamline, she had a mock job interview with a representative from Northwestern. Since then, she has been developing her professional skills with the help of the School of Business’ Career mentoring program.
As part of the program, Insisiengmay was matched with a mentor in her field, who provided one-on-one coaching on her resume, LinkedIn profile and interview preparation.
“One of the strongest aspects of my role is networking,” she said. “I think where it really came to me was being in the career mentoring program. This largely helped prepare you for not only landing jobs, but also encouraged you to do a lot of networking.
Scholarships and community
Insisiengmay was initially drawn to Hamline in search of a smaller school that encouraged close ties with teachers. While two of her cousins also studied at Hamline, she is the first in her immediate family to attend a four-year college, and she said she Hamline Firsts Award (scholarship for first generation students), as well as an excellence scholarship (awarded on the basis of the cumulative average), also played a role in its decision.
“The merit scholarship motivated me to stay the course and continue to do well in all of my courses. I’ve made the Dean’s List for the past three semesters, and it was exciting to continue to surpass myself, ”she said.
Insisiengmay’s classes developed his personal and professional skills, exploring his interest in analysis First year seminar to discover that she enjoys working in a team, a surprise given that she was not always a fan of group projects in high school.
That hasn’t been all the job for Insisiengmay, however. It is also about building a community. One of her earliest memories of Hamline was a teacher-hosted campus movie night, where the class watched “Poltergeist” with candy and popcorn around Halloween. The friendliness and openness of the campus community to everyone is Hamline’s main draw, she said.
“I love that most of the community is really passionate about diversity and inclusion and makes sure everyone feels welcome,” she said.
