Masks will remain optional for now for students in the Menomonee Falls School District returning to school, and many parents want it to be so.
Several parents demonstrated outside the Menomonee Falls village hall ahead of the August 23 school board meeting. About 14 speakers spoke during the citizen comments portion of the meeting, with the majority opposing the requirement to wear masks. Although there was an item on the board’s agenda for “COVID-19 response and back-to-school mitigation planning,” the agenda did not list a point for council to vote on a mask requirement.
At the start of the meeting, school board chairwoman Faith VanderHorst said the decision to force students to wear masks would not be made by the administration but by a school board vote.
The Menomonee Falls School Board opted to maintain mask requirements towards the end of last school year, drawing complaints from parents at the time.
