The school year is starting and students will not be required by the state to wear masks, despite what the data might say.
As local districts began to develop their COVID plans, many expected the state to apply a mandate like last year, but now the decision is up to them individually.
Many other states have done so. Many school districts ask for it. but Governor Gretchen Whitmer is adamant that the state of Michigan will not back down. There will be no statewide mask mandate for schools. This apparently goes against his advisers.
“I recommended that if a mask warrant was in place and followed, it would likely reduce the spread of COVID-19 in schools,” said Dr Joneigh Khaldun, state medical director at the week last at a press conference.
On Monday in Lansing, Whitmer agreed the masks would help. She agreed they were working, but also felt it should be a local choice.
“We encourage districts to do that too, strongly encourage,” Whitmer said, “At this point 35% of our students are in districts that have adopted a mask mandate and I hope others will continue to do it We believe it is the right thing to do now.
For a year and a half, his office has been taking the heat for these COVID-related mandates, now it’s on the neighborhoods. Again on Tuesday, she was questioned about it.
“First I want to recognize that there are a lot of districts that have adopted a masking policy and I commend them,” Whitmer said, “I’m grateful for their leadership. It’s not easy, but we know that school boards work with parents is the best way to move forward and protect children and their workforce.
While not being ordered to comply, Whitmer points out that the state fully supports districts that choose to hide.
“We’ve been facing this same dynamic for a year and a half now,” said Whitmer, “It’s very difficult but we are here to support them and to support their efforts.”
