Vanessa Alfermann, a Missouri nurse who contracted COVID-19 last fall while pregnant and ultimately lost her baby boy, Axel, at 22 weeks, has appeared on Anderson Cooper 360 Tuesday to encourage pregnant women and others to get vaccinated.
Alfermann fell ill shortly after her husband tested positive, and everything was fine for the first two days before getting worse.
“I started having back pain and weird front aches,” Alfermann said. “So I went to the local OB, and, you know, they sent me home, said it was a side effect of COVID. They didn’t check me out or anything. Then they didn’t check me out or anything. that night they sent me home because at that time I was stable.
Alfermann said she started bleeding that night and started to feel more pain. But it wasn’t until the next morning that she woke up around 1:30 a.m. and realized she was in labor and went to the hospital.
“I wasn’t really saying what I thought was going to happen, but I knew it,” Alfermann said. “We got to the hospital and they examined me, and they said, ‘We have to get you up now. You have exposed membranes. So, I mean, they rushed me upstairs and at that point they realized I was completely dilated. My bag was sticking out and Axel was coming no matter what.
It was in November of last year, just a month before Alfermann could get vaccinated. After receiving the vaccine, she posted on Facebook saying she did it to protect others, ending the post saying, “Every person deserves not to lose someone to COVID. It’s for my Axel !!
Alfermann said this day was incredibly difficult.
“It was a very emotional day, you know? I was working a 12 hour shift that day, so I just went up to the bathroom and cried, “Alfermann said,” because I was thinking, “Dude, if it was last month, I wouldn’t be in the situation I am in. ‘ So very bittersweet to have this vaccine, but, you know, it was too late for my story.
Alfermann said she would have been vaccinated last fall if it had been available, even before Pfizer’s vaccine received full FDA approval. Now she urges others to do so in the hope that they can avoid the same fate.
“These vaccines are there. And I’m not pushing the warrant, ”Alfermann said. “I push people to talk to their doctors, to talk to healthcare professionals. Don’t do this hearsay or all of those things that get spread so easily that aren’t really medical facts because these lies kill people.
