A Staffordshire musician who fell ill with Covid after rejecting the vaccine has now died, days after pleading for others not to repeat his mistake.
Marcus Birks, 40, from Leek in Staffordshire, died on Friday morning, his family confirmed.
Mr Birks, who was a musician in the Cappella group alongside his wife Lis Birks, had previously said he had changed his mind about the Covid vaccine and would tell his family to get vaccinated after falling sick.
Speaking to the BBC earlier in August from the intensive care unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital, he said: ‘If you haven’t been sick you don’t think you’re going to get sick then you listen to the [anti-vaccine] thing. When you feel like you can’t breathe enough it is the scariest feeling in the world.
He had not had the vaccine, claiming he was “ignorant of it and simply rejected it”. He added that information about the jab had been garbled by social media and conspiracy theorists. Speaking from the hospital, he said: “The first thing I’m going to tell my whole family is to get the vaccine and anyone I see, and as soon as I can get it I definitely get it. . ”
In a Facebook tribute to her late husband, Ms Birks said: “The pain I feel as I write this is unbearable, my heart has been ripped out, my soul and my world completely and utterly shattered.
“I made a promise to him that I will tell our little boy every day how much he loves him, how special he is and how he would have been / is the best father a son could wish for.”
Ms Birks described her husband as a “caring, loving, loyal, selfless and proud man,” saying that “all he wanted to do was help as many people as he could, which in itself showed how much he had a pure heart and soul “. .
The husband and wife couple had toured with the Cappella group. Mr. Birks also appeared in the first series of television shows Army of bad boys, in which he won the award for best recruit.
