MASON, Ohio – Sand Gibson, a fourth-grade student, died Tuesday of a cardiac arrest related to angina and flu, said Mason City Schools spokeswoman in a message to parents.

Gibson received the double diagnosis early Tuesday morning and died a few hours later.

"Sand was a big-hearted friend who loved pink," wrote Carson.

She encouraged all residents of the district to wear pink at school Thursday in her memory.

Dr. Achint Choksy, a family medicine specialist, told WCPO that children may be at higher risk for severe influenza symptoms or death because of their environment.

"Because kids go to school and are in a public environment more often and surrounded by many people," said Choksy. "They are more likely to get it."

Western Row brought in additional counselors to help Gibson's friends and classmates cope with the news of his death.
