HONOLULU (AP) – Chevan Cordeiro had three touchdowns, Dedrick Parson scored two and the University of Hawaii held off Portland State 49-35 on Saturday night in the first-ever football game played on the Manoa campus.

Cordeiro threw touchdown passes at Nick Mardner and Jared Smart, Calvin Turner Jr. scored on a wild, twisty 34-yard run – in which he raced through Hawaii territory before descending the left sideline into the end zone – and Parson ran for a 17-yard TD as the Rainbow Warriors scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to take a 28-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Hawaii led 42-14 midway through the third before the Vikings scored twice in eight seconds near the end of the quarter, with the second touchdown occurring when Portland State recovered from a failed kickoff from Turner in the end zone. .

“I told our guys in the locker room that we were out, I thought we were ready to play, go out and take a huge lead, and then obviously we got really, really sloppy,” UH coach Todd Graham said. “The most important thing, man, you should always be excited and happy when you win.”

The redeveloped 9,000-seat Clarence TC Ching complex will be the home of the Warriors until the new Aloha Stadium Entertainment District is completed. It was the first UH home game on the island outside of Aloha Stadium since December 7, 1974, when the Rainbow Warriors hosted Arizona State at Honolulu Stadium, which had served as the home ground for the team from 1926 to 1974.

Saturday’s game went without fans due to restrictions imposed by the city and county of Honolulu amid an increase in COVID-19 cases.

“Proud to have won this first victory on the Ching field” Graham said.

Parson added a 2-yard touchdown rush in the third quarter and Dae Dae Hunter, who finished with 128 rushing yards, scored on a 59-yard rush in the fourth for Hawaii (1-1).

Davis Alexander threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns for Portland State (0-1), but much of that came after the Rainbow Warriors took their massive lead.

“The first quarter we were driving, we were hungry, then the second half maybe people got complacent,” he said. said Lamb. “I just feel like we need to keep our foot on the accelerator pedal.”

Cordeiro completed 18 of 25 passes with an interception and rushed for 66 rushing yards.

“It’s so great to get that first victory” he said. “Just getting that first win under us, I mean there’s still a lot of stuff we need to work on, but, yeah, it feels good to have that first win.”

The Warriors, coming off a 44-10 beating by UCLA at the Rose Bowl, will face their second Pac-12 opponent of the season next Saturday when they travel to Corvallis to take on Oregon State ( 0-1). The game kicks off at 5 p.m. HST and will be televised nationally on FS1.
