Florida adds 1,296 more COVID-19 deaths, 12,000 more cases

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – The latest COVID-19 data from the CDC on Thursday shows an increase of 1,296 deaths from the total reported a day earlier.

Not all of these deaths occurred in the past day and span weeks. Antidating of deaths now shows more than 7,600 people died in Florida in August, the deadliest month of the pandemic in the state.

This equates to an average of 245 deaths per day in August, and there may still be more virus-related deaths to be attributed to those dates.

Florida now has 3,391,158 cases and 48,273 COVID-19-related deaths since the start of the epidemic, according to the latest CDC data.

12,386 new cases have been reported since Wednesday.

New cases and hospitalizations have trended downward in recent days after the peak of the August summer wave, when more than 21,000 new infections were reported per day on average.

The 7-day moving average for new cases in the state is 14,297, the lowest since July 27.

As of Thursday, 12,735 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 across Florida, according to the Florida Hospital Association.

Last month, the state’s health department went from counting deaths on the day they were checked to tracking them on the date of a person’s death. Deaths typically take several days to process, so single date totals may slowly increase a few days later and day-to-day increases seem smaller at first.

The batch of 1,296 deaths reported Thursday is lower than the record 1,338 added the previous Thursday. 1,064 more deaths were reported Monday in CDC data.

The CDC gets those numbers from the Florida Department of Health, which now does not publicly release its full COVID-19 reports until Friday.
