FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Police are investigating after two swastikas were found engraved on a sign at the front of Beth Sholom Temple on Pamela Road in Framingham.
Police said the hate symbols were discovered Thursday morning and reported to police.
The mayor of Framingham, Yvonne Spicer, said a swastika was found on the aisle of the temple at around 10:30 a.m.
“Of course, that saddens me,” Spicer said. “Hatred has no place in Framingham. Police officers already patrol our temples regularly, and this effort will continue. “
Beth Sholom Temple also issued the following vandalism statement:
“It is extremely disturbing to discover a symbol of animosity towards the Jewish community in the midst of our peak holiday season. The swastika represents a tragic and deadly chapter in the history of our people and should not be taken lightly, ”the statement said. “I hope the author who carved this hateful symbol can understand the horrific images they conjured up for many in our community, including members of the Beth Sholom Temple who are themselves survivors of the Holocaust.”
“We also know that this does not represent the sentiment of the Framingham community as a whole. We are proud of our place in this community and we value our relationships with our neighbors of all religions, ”the statement said. “We are a vibrant and resilient community, and we have no intention of letting someone’s ignorant meanness dampen the sweetness of our New Year.”
The vandalism occurred as members of the Jewish faith had just celebrated Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, this week.
