GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) – Galveston County reports its first COVID-19 pediatric death.

According to a announcement made by the county health district on Thursday the girl was 10 or younger.

She died of the virus on Tuesday, September 7. It is not known if the girl had any underlying health issues.

Health officials said this was the first COVID-related death of such a young person in Galveston County.

The girl was a student at a school in Galveston County, although county health officials said they did not believe she contracted the virus on campus.

According to Dr Philip Keizer of the Galveston County Health Authority, the girl was in pre-K.
