The Yankees received two doses of bad news Thursday when it comes to their pitching staff – one that impacts them this season and one that will impact them in 2022.
The club placed right-hander Jameson Taillon, who has been on the rotation for much of the summer on the injury list on Thursday with a partial torn tendon in his right ankle, said Aaron Boone.
The fourth-year manager also revealed that Zack Britton, declared for the season a few weeks ago when it was determined the left-handed lifter needed surgery to remove a bone chip in his elbow, could miss any next season also after the procedure ended up being “essentially” a Tommy John operation.
Britton, who underwent the operation in Los Angeles on Wednesday, said during the Yankees’ recent trip to the West Coast that he hoped surgeon, orthopedic specialist Dr Neal ElAttrache, would only have to remove the bone chip. and would have nothing to do with his ulnar collateral ligament. It turned out that ElAttrache determined that the UCL needed to be rebuilt. The timeframe for pitchers undergoing this type of surgery is typically 12 to 18 months. The 33-year-old Britton, 0-1 with a 5.89 ERA in 22 games this season, one in which he made three separate stints on the IL, has one year left on his contract.
As for Taillon, 8-6 with a 4.41 ERA in 27 starts this season, he obviously won’t take his next turn in the rotation – which would have been Sunday against the Mets – but Boone said it was too early. to say if the right-handed season is in danger.
“It looks worse than it is,” Boone said of the diagnosis.
Boone said Taillon, 6-0 with a 2.11 ERA in a 10-start streak from June 18 through August. 9 before going 1-2 with a 7.01 ERA in his last five starts before that injury, was in a walking boot Wednesday and Thursday, something he hoped he could get rid of by Friday.
Taillon started to experience ankle discomfort in the latter part of his start on Monday against the Blue Jays when he allowed three runs and three hits in seven innings.
“I think there’s a chance he only misses one (start), but it could be something dragging on,” Boone said. “We just have to see how he reacts.”
In the meantime, rookie Luis Gil will start at Citi Field on Sunday. Right-hander Mike King, on the IL since July 5 with a contusion to his right middle finger, is expected to be activated before Friday’s game at the Mets, said Boone, another possibility of rotation and, at the very least, an arm that can fulfill several roles in the enclosure.
Additionally, ace Gerrit Cole, who left early Tuesday with strain in his left hamstring, played a wrestling in the outfield ahead of Thursday night’s game and could “potentially” return to the rotation on Monday. or Tuesday, Boone said.
