If summer 2021 was hot, it was. Temperatures have landed in the five hottest summers on record for our four climate stations in the region. The meteorological summer is from June 1 to August 31.

- Traverse City had its 4th hottest been registered.
Scientists from Climate Central, an independent, non-profit organization that focuses on researching climate change using data and facts. Their goal is to communicate the facts about climate change and its impact on our lives to the public.
Climate Central has data that shows an increase in the frequency of recordings going back to the late 1890s. If 50% of the recordings were heat related and 50% of the recordings were cold related, we were right in the middle.
When the purple line moves up and the orange line moves down, extreme cold was more common. As the orange line moves up and the purple line moves down, hot extremes were more common. In other words, the closer the bar is to 100%, the more “one-sided” and extreme the temperatures.
Notice on the graph below the orange bars an upward trend line. This means that the trend of high heat records is on the rise. Over 60% of records broken per decade have been heat-related records since the 1900s. 40% or less were cold-related.
The record heat of 2021 also impacted the contiguous United States. The Orange the points are hottest summers on record and the Red the dots are the 10 hottest summers on record.
It wasn’t just the temperatures that hit an all-time high in 2021 during the summer months, the precipitation as well. After a dry spring, the summer months were among the wettest on record.
