CLEVELAND, Ohio – Medina and Wadsworth school districts are among those reporting the most new COVID-19 infections in the latest weekly update from the Ohio Department of Health.

Schools in the city of Medina reported the third total of new infections, with 91 among students and five among staff. Schools in the town of Wadsworth reported the sixth-highest total, with 71 new infections among students and six among staff.

The high number of infections in the two school districts in Medina County is particularly striking as other districts reporting high numbers of new infections – such as those in Toledo, Cincinnati and Columbus – are among the largest in the state.

Cleveland, meanwhile, reported 54 new cases among college students, tied for the 14th highest total in the latest weekly update. Cleveland has reported 14 staff cases.

Ohio continued to see an increase in coronavirus infections statewide, with the most contagious delta variant driving the increase. The ODH reported Thursday that Ohio had recorded an average of 582.4 new cases of coronavirus per 100,000 population in the past two weeks.

The increase has had a significant impact on classrooms across the United States, with many school districts expected to delay or completely close classes in at least one entire school building in more than a dozen states, according to the Associated Press.

Some school districts in northeastern Ohio have responded to the wave by imposing mask warrants. Schools in Willoughby-Eastlake City implemented a warrant after the district reported 25 coronavirus infections in its first week of class.

The current figures reflect only data added from the previous week (Monday to Sunday). As a result, Thursday’s update is based on data collected from August 30 to September 3.
