PORT ANGELES – Cammack Clinical Services inside Jim’s Pharmacy in Port Angeles is now one of the first pharmacies in Washington to offer monoclonal antibody treatment for Covid-19 on an outpatient basis, which you can’t get at the WTO or elsewhere nearby.
Simply put, the treatment, in this case 4 subcutaneous injections taken at the same time, is aimed at people who have tested positive or exposed to Covid in the last 10 days and who are either over 65 years of age or one or more long list of comorbidities that would put them at risk of hospitalization for a severe case of the virus.
Office manager and chief financial officer Anna Shields said the state Department of Health contacted them late last month to see if they would be willing to join the effort to help keep more of people outside our hospitals who, it’s no secret, are overrun with Covid patients.
“Absolutely. On September 1, we reached out to every doctor, health care provider, clinic, hospital in Clallam County and let them know that we are offering monoclonal antibody treatments. And yes, there is a huge sigh of relief within our community of providers who were able to do so. ”
In July, the FDA issued emergency use authorization for what is currently an unapproved treatment for Covid.
Because everyone they will be treating is potentially positive, they’ve set up a special treatment area behind the pharmacy where people can drive up to and get started.
“We will wait for you, because you have made an appointment. People should expect it to take five minutes to complete the final consent form for treatment. They will then enter the private area and the pharmacist will come to administer. Patients are requested to wear shorts and a t-shirt. If it’s colder and they need to wear something, that’s fine, but it’s four injections.
After receiving the injections, the patient will need to stick around for an hour so they can monitor their vital signs before they are allowed to go home.
The best news is, insurance or no insurance, treatment is free.
“We charge people’s medical insurance. But anyway, even if the insurance says “No, we won’t cover you”, basically Jim’s Pharmacy will cover the administration costs. This is what we have to do for a community. This is what we do with the covid. This is what we do with everything. We go up to the plate. “
