A plane crashed yesterday afternoon in a farm field south of 160th Street in Marshall County. The Marshall County Communications Center received a call at 1 p.m. yesterday from a pilot who said he crashed a plane in a cornfield somewhere northwest of Marshalltown Airport and said he was trapped in the plane upside down.

“They kept losing connection and really couldn’t get a good location where it could be,” Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips said.

Sheriff’s assistants and first responders were dispatched, along with a Marshalltown Aviation observation plane to help locate the crashed plane. The plane was eventually found approximately 2,400th mile from 160th Street in a cornfield in Marshall County at 1:22 p.m.

Phillips said locating the plane was extremely difficult given the conditions with the plane being very small and among the tall corn. Along with five sheriff’s assistants, Albion First Responders, Liscomb First Responders, Albion Firefighters, Clemons Firefighters, Liscomb Firefighters, and Marshalltown Fire and Rescue were all dispatched to help locate the downed plane.

Based on the investigation so far, Phillips said it appeared the plane had mechanical issues and the pilot had attempted to return to the airport. The pilot then realized that the plane was not going to return to the airport and then tried to land on the asphalt at 160th Street, but instead the plane landed in the large But.

“What happens is that the corn catches on the wings and flips the plane upside down”, said Phillips. “It’s kind of a common crash scene that we find with these planes.”

Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office helped free the pilot who was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries. The plane itself suffered heavy damage and is a total loss.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the plane crash.

“I just want to thank all the first responders”, said Phillips. “These are the tough calls we get when someone needs help and we just can’t locate them. It is enough to cooperate among many different agencies to achieve a successful resolution. “
