11) Waystation for March?

Gateway’s design is always evolving, and it’s hard to predict how it will support lunar exploration, let alone exploration of Mars. In 2020, for example, media reported that Gateway would be taken off the “critical path” to exploring Artemis. However, NASA maintains that many of the “lessons learned” from Artemis and Gateway will be useful for the eventual exploration of Mars, ranging from how to provide astronauts from afar, to the safety of crew members, to learning to “live off the land” in another world through the use of in situ resources.

Although connections to Mars remain speculative and subject to change, previous proposals for Gateway regarding the Red Planet include its use as a transit station for samples, the creation of international partnerships to prepare for Mars, and the use of Gateway as “analogue of Mars” to prepare for missions to the red planet.
