PEORIA EAST (WEEK) – For more than two decades, Mike Dimmick and Tom McIntyre have been the anchors that residents of central Illinois have turned to for their local news. September 11, 2001 was no different. Dimmick and McIntyre both witnessed the attacks through media coverage. McIntyre watched it all on TV.
“The first thought was that it was an accident because there had been during World War II a bomber hit the Empire State Building, but it was on a foggy night, and when the second hit, there was no question what it was, “he said. noted.
Dimmick was in the car, hooked up to the news radio.
“It was really kind of puzzled, and like a lot of people, it was a feeling of what was going on,” he said.
Dimmick said that day in the newsroom it was about getting as much information as possible.
“You were really trying to get the latest facts as they come in and then give them some perspective,” Dimmick recalls.
The next day, the focus was on the story of the suffering of the people of central Illinois and their help, such as the stories of missing people, but also the stories of caring people.
Many reporters who spoke to 25 News for this story said they were comforted to see so many people stepping out to do their part after the attacks … which begs the question: is tragedy the only thing that can unify the Americans? McIntyre doesn’t think so.
“If a great tragedy brings the people together, then a great blessing must bring the people together.”
