The Straughn Tigers beat Ashford with a powerful passing game in their home opener for a 42-20 win on Friday night.
Head coach Ashley Kilcrease thought her team got off to a good start. “I love the way we got out and thought it was the best we’ve done so far this year. They gave us a lot of things in defense that were difficult to manage, but I think we did a good job capitalizing on the passing game. That’s what the good teams do, and we were able to throw the ball away tonight when they ran away from us, ”he said.
Kilcrease added that they had to do a better job in the second half and felt that was the only downside. He said: “We have to finish the games, and next week we are going to have a good schedule and look forward to the opportunity.”
Straughn (4-0, 2-0 4A Region 2) started the game alone 49 and immediately got to work. Abram Guilford threw a 40-yard touchdown at Micah Turner in the fourth game of opening practice. Riley Brooks found Logan Arnett for the two-run test and an early 8-0 lead. Ashford (0-3, 0-2) was stopped in defense, but the Tigers followed suit. The Yellow Jackets finally got their first down on a 20-yard run, but ran out of steam. SHS took over and got two first downs before a punt. Jaylon Guilford rushed 22 yards to the end zone after an AHS fumble. This gave the hosts a 14-0 lead after a quarter.
After another defensive save, Abram Guilford found Logan Olhava open for a huge 51-yard gain in AHS territory. Four games later, Jaylon Guilford had a 3-yard touchdown run and Brenden Bartholomew gave SHS a 21-0 lead. Neither team posed a threat to the next two possessions. Ashford spat the ball again as Brooks retrieved it. Straughn only needed two plays and 45 seconds to strike again. Jaylon Guilford found an opening and extended the Tigers’ lead to 28-0 with another 22-yard touchdown. The Yellow Jackets led at the end of the half but failed with an interception from Olhava.
The Yellow Jackets started the second half back. On the fourth down, Wyatt Smith recovered a fumble and took 4 yards to pay for the dirt that took the lead to 35-0. The Tigers took over on offense and got two first downs before their own fumble. Jalen Smith then made the bigger play for Ashford with a 64-yard rush before a 3-yard touchdown. The score remained 35-6 after three quarters. Straughn started the fourth in good form before another fumble. D’ryus McCarter notched 51 yards for another score. The colon reduced the deficit to 35-14.
Abram Guilford found Parker Black on a 20-yard gain to start the next drive. Three games later, Olhava had a big 47-yard touchdown reception and Bartholomew scored 42-14 with 8:45 to go. AHS took over and used almost 7 minutes to score the final points. Smith had a 5-yard touchdown and the conversion was not good. SHS ran out of time to seal the region’s victory.
Straughn will travel to the capital next week to face St. James (3-1, 2-0).
