Florida added 100,000 COVID cases this week, the lowest since mid-July

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Florida has reported just over 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, a 33% drop from last month’s peak.

The 100,012 new cases from Sept. 3-9 is the state’s lowest weekly total since mid-July. Florida has had three consecutive weeks with more than 150,000 new cases in August.

The new case positivity rate of 13.5% is also the lowest since mid-July, according to a new data report from the Florida Department of Health released Friday night. (See the full report at the bottom of this page.)

The age group with the most new cases remains the population under 12, which is not eligible for vaccination.

The FDOH indicates that 17,165 children under the age of 12 have been infected with COVID-19 in the past week.

State data shows 69% of eligible Floridians (12 and older) have received at least one vaccine injection, a number of public health officials are trying to increase. The FDOH indicates that 349,845 doses were administered last week, which is the fewest since mid-July.

Florida added 17,854 more COVID-19 cases and three more virus-related deaths in the latest daily data released by the CDC on Friday.

The daily increase in new cases is the state’s highest in more than a week (since September 2).

Florida now has 3,409,012 cases and 48,276 COVID-19-related deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest CDC data.

Florida has seen a noticeable drop in the number of new cases and hospitalizations since mid-August, when an average of more than 21,000 new cases were reported each day at the height of the summer wave due to the delta variant .

The state’s current 7-day moving average for new cases is 14,259, the lowest since late July. Florida accounted for about 10% of the nation’s new COVID cases over the past week.

August was the deadliest month in the pandemic in Florida, with at least 7,600 COVID-19-related deaths, an average of more than 245 per day. Some deaths likely have not yet been reported, as death data typically has a delay in recording in state actions which are then reported to the CDC.

Due to this lag, the state’s weekly death reports are incomplete, as more of the 353 listed so far from September 3-9 are expected to be added in the coming days.

For example, on Thursday, a batch of 1,296 COVID-related deaths were reported by the state to the CDC, a total that spans several weeks.

According to the Florida Hospital Association, 12,262 patients were admitted with COVID statewide on Thursday, continuing a steady decline below the peak of the recent peak.
