Roundtable: will UCLA win the Pac-12? Is USC Better? Can we reach the playoffs?
Through Los Angeles Times staff
Are USC and UCLA good enough to pack or approach the Colosseum on November 20?
Ben Bolch: Yes. UCLA’s resurgence will help line stadium pockets left empty by Trojan fans – and there could be big holes to fill if USC falters this season. It could be one of the biggest city rivalry crowds in recent memory. Remember to bring and wear your mask.
J. Brady McCollough: This is the first time USC and UCLA have been in the top 25 together since Week 3 of 2017, and the Bruins had a very short stint that week and did not return. I moved to Los Angeles in the spring of 2018 and was surprised at how little buzz surrounding the football rivalry was, and the fervor has only waned since then. The rivalry had to become relevant nationally again to strengthen its hold on the imagination at the local level as well, and even with the Delta variant or whatever with COVID, I would expect we would see an incredible atmosphere. on November 20 which shows that the country LA cares a lot about college football.
Ryan Kartje: Ben is right. If USC begins to slide down the stretch, don’t be surprised if the Colosseum ends in a sea of blue and gold. The combination of Helton’s status in the hot seat, coupled with mask warrants and other COVID-related changes, left the Colosseum particularly sterile in week 1. But given the path the two rivals appear to be taking from crosstown, I anticipate the stakes in this year’s rivalry. the match will be particularly high. If USC is up to fight for the Pac-12 again, fans will find a way to fill the stands against UCLA no matter what they think of the coach.
