The California Highway Patrol said a man was killed early Saturday morning on Palm Drive, north of Varner Road, in Desert Hot Springs.

Officials said just after midnight a woman pulled over a sedan near the right shoulder of Varner Road. They said a man, who was a passenger in the car, got out and walked over to the driver’s side.

He has been identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Ortega-Dage.

Officers said that was when he was struck by a Nissan pickup truck, which sped away.

The driver of the van was later located and arrested for drunk driving.

Ortega-Dage died of his injuries at the scene.

Shadow Hills High School, which Ortega-Dage attended and played football, issued a press release paying tribute to him.

The school said, “Isaiah’s years in Shadow Hills were the years when the foundations of our football program were laid.”

The statement also said that schools are spending the morning with the victim’s family during these difficult times, and that she plans to “honor her legacy” throughout her football season.

Meanwhile, officers said the crash was still under investigation.
