A little momentum can go a long way.
Down 7-6 with less than a minute to go in the first half against Huron, Lima Central Catholic was on the verge of breaking out of his own 40-yard line after another inconsistent attacking streak. On the punt, Huron missed the catch and Thunderbird Peyton Cutlip pounced on loose pigskin to regain possession of LCC at the 45-yard line with 48 seconds left in the second quarter.
From there, LCC swept the field in 33 seconds to score their second touchdown and took the lead, then continued that momentum by scoring on their first two possessions of the second half to help propel the Thunderbirds to a 41-28 victory on Saturday against the Tigers. .
LCC, wins its third consecutive game and improves to 3-1. Huron drops to 2-2 on aggregate.
This is Scott Palte’s 100th victory as a head coach.
“We had a break there,” Palte said. “They missed the punt and we took advantage of the mistake and got a halftime lead that we probably didn’t deserve there in the first half and then our kids came out in the second half and just played an amazing half of football. We really tackled both sides and got back to the line of scrimmage in attack, and I’m really proud of our kids’ effort.
The Thunderbird offense, which struggled for most of the first half, set things up in the second half with quarterback Evan Unruh showing his versatility coupled with the combo of Quintel Peoples and Keiron Bailey.
Unruh ran for 214 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries and was 6 of 10 for 134 passing yards. Unruh made touchdown passes of 10, 8, 42 and 14 yards. Unruh may have added a few more touchdowns, but was replaced by Carson Palmer in the wild formation when LCC entered the 10-yard line and the runner-up scored at 1 and 4 yards.
Receiver Travis Hoyle Jr. had three catches for 100 yards and catches for 29 and 54 yards that were key receptions in LCC’s scoring campaigns.
Bailey, doing most of his runs indoors, had 97 yards on 19 carries and Peoples, using his speed, produced 61 yards on 13 carries.
Before the game, Huron had given up just 19 points in his first three games.
“We had a lot of good stuff,” Palte said. “We had some big passing games and a few different guys handled the ball well. “
Despite dropping some late scores, the Thunderbirds’ defense proved effective early on when the offense was trying to balance and in the third quarter when LCC was running its run.
The Thunderbirds, pressuring Huron quarterback Dylan Hohler all day, registered five sacks and managed a Quintel Peoples interception that led to a touchdown. Hohler rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and had just 27 rushing yards and 37 passing yards in the first half. He finished with 160 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception on 12 of 20 attempts.
“We gave up a bit at the end but I think our kids did a great job in the first half when the attack was crackling and making plays and slowing them down and it’s a very good win for our children, ”Palte said.
