PITTSBURGH (AP) – Wade Miley allowed six runs on 10 hits and the Cincinnati Reds lost for the sixth time in eight games, 6-5 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
Miley (12-6) allowed three runs in the first and three more in the fifth before being struck out with one out. The six runs (earned five) awarded were Miley’s most important since the Rockies scored eight on May 14.
The Reds entered the day half a game ahead of the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals for the National League’s second wild card.
Pirates starter Dillon Peters (1-2) had five clean innings, allowing five hits and five strikeouts to help Pittsburgh secure its fifth win in seven games after a six-game losing streak. He was 0-3 in six major league starts since his last win with the Angels on September 24, 2019.
Nick Castellanos pushed Chris Stratton deep on the first pitch he saw for his 29th homer, making it 6-5 with two strikeouts in the ninth. Stratton then struck out Joey Votto in search of his fifth save.
After a mound visit with runners in first and second through fifth, Miley allowed Yoshi Tsutsugo to make a left single, leading Kevin Newman, before Reynolds scored on a stray pitch in the third from left fielder Aristides Aquino who gave the Pirates a 5-0 lead. Jacob Stallings scored a sixth point with an RBI single.
Miley was taken off following a Groundout from Anthony Alford. He’s allowed at least 10 hits in two of his last three starts, relinquishing 12 to the Cardinals on September 1.
The Reds scored four goals against reliever Nick Mears in the sixth.
A goal-laden single from Tucker Barnhart produced two goals before Max Schrock scored on a defensive player’s pick. Right fielder Ben Gamel was then unable to make a diving catch to deprive Kyle Farmer of a simple two-out RBI, reducing the deficit to 6-4.
Three singles to Miley’s right gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead in the first.
Tsutsugo led Ke’Bryan Hayes before Stallings followed with another RBI single, scoring Bryan Reynolds. Cincinnati had a chance to come out of the inning when Alford sent a soft dribbler in the third, but Eugenio Suarez missed him for a mistake. Gamel followed with a single RBI with two outs.
