A miniature cradle and a doll that nestles perfectly inside.
These artifacts, along with two wooden sticks dating from roughly the same period, found their way to Eckerd College, thanks to a donation from the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Saint Petersburg.
The cradle, doll and sticks belonged to Californian architect and designer Alex Stark, who donated them to the museum. The pieces are part of a collection of more than 50 pre-Columbian artifacts from the Moche culture, which Stark’s late father had collected.
The museum did not have room to display the full collection, so Michael Bennett, senior curator of ancient Western art at MFA, contacted Tom Schneider, associate vice president of Eckerd for development, and gave the artifacts as a gift to the College. “We jumped at the chance,” says Schneider.
“The Museum of Fine Arts is proud to have been able to facilitate the donation of the Peruvian doll and cradle, as well as two other Peruvian works, to Eckerd College,” said Darcy Schuller, MFA Director of Marketing and Communications . “The private owner very much wanted these family heirlooms to be used for educational purposes. “
The cradle, doll and sticks are now on display at Cobb Gallery of Eckerd. And they are already attracting attention.
