INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A musical on stage at the former National Center’s Murat Theater takes theatergoers to the glory days of Motown and some of its biggest stars.
“Dreamgirls” was created by the Indiana Performing Arts Center and Kaidydid Productions. The shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday, and tickets will be on sale in line.
News 8 had the opportunity on Wednesday to speak with the directors of the show and some of the performers.
“’Dreamgirls’ is actually the toughest production we’ve done to date,” said art director Kila J. Adams. “We built this family. They aren’t just there to put on a show. They are there to tell a story.
Artistic Director Dee Duvall said, “He’s got this phenomenal local cast that won’t disappoint.”
Anjelah Evans, who stars as Effie White, talks about what she and her cast have in store for the performance. “They can expect a good acting game,” Evans said. “Singing is what I was chosen for and this part allows me to expand my range and for people to hear my power and see the diversity of my voice. “
Summary
“Dreamgirls The Broadway Musical which showcases some of Barry Gordy’s Motown business aspirations and the success of R&B acts such as The Marvelettes, The Chiffons, James Brown and The Supremes. The musical follows the tumultuous story of a young trio of Chicago singers called “The Dreams” who become music superstars. Set in the ruthless, high-stakes world and booming popular music industry in the 1960s and 1970s. Dreamgirls portrays the very dramatic interactions between the characters on and off stage as they overcome a myriad of obstacles in pursuit of their dreams. They are clearly discovering how the music industry can go from brutally ugly to incredibly glorious in the blink of an eye.
