MARSHALL – The people who live and work in Marshall are a critical part of the city’s success, said Mayor Bob Byrnes.

“People and families will stay if they feel welcome in the community” he said.

This week, the city invites residents of Marshall to participate in a new community celebration to encourage a sense of belonging.

The City of Marshall has announced it is celebrating Hospitality Week on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the city and the Marshall Region YMCA will team up to host a free event featuring a children’s carnival and music.

“The welcome week is an opportunity for our community to show how much we appreciate the contribution of each member to our city” said Byrnes.

“It’s exciting to be a part of Marshall’s Welcoming Week, a national celebration that discusses the importance of being a good neighbor and providing an inclusive community to our new and longtime residents. “ said Michele Knife Sterner, member of the Marshall Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission.

“From the Dakota (Native American Tribe) welcoming new people to the creation of the city of Marshall, our community has welcomed and provided a home for people from all over the United States and around the world to live and call Marshall home. “

Welcome Week is a national event that has been taking place since 2012 to help showcase communities that strive to be more welcoming places for everyone, including immigrants and new residents. Several communities in Minnesota, including Windom and Willmar, have hosted hospitality week events.

“It’s quite new in this region”, said Amanda Beckler, community education coordinator at Marshall Community Services. Beckler and Marshall City Clerk Kyle Box said the Southwest Initiative Foundation has asked if Marshall is interested in attending Welcome Week.

“It was a yes from everyone” says the box. Byrnes said there is a “Natural synergy” between the objective of Welcoming Week and the work of the DCI Commission.

The City of Marshall and the DCI Commission, in collaboration with the YMCA, will organize a free community event on the theme of “Belonging begins with us. “

The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marshall Area YMCA.

Beckler said Saturday’s activities will include a children’s carnival, bucket truck rides, music and interactive artwork.

With the Home Week celebration, farmers market and sporting events taking place in town on Saturday, Byrnes said it should be another busy weekend in Marshall.
