RICHMOND, Virginia (WWBT) – Here’s a look at our top headlines before we start the day!

Scattered showers this afternoon

Today it will be mostly cloudy. A shower is possible this morning, then scattered showers / thunderstorms likely this afternoon.

The rain can be slow and heavy in places.

Pedestrian killed on I-64

A pedestrian was killed on Interstate 64 in Henrico Wednesday evening. Soldiers were called around 8:10 p.m. to report a person standing in the right lane of the highway.

Before the soldiers could arrive, the pedestrian was struck. The driver who initially struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and is working with the police. The police are investigating.

All westbound lanes were closed near Mechanicsville Turnpike for an extended period.

Closure of the boulevard bridge

The boulevard bridge will be closed this Thursday for several hours.

Crews are to perform lighting and maintenance work on Westover Hills Boulevard. The bridge will therefore be closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 16.

Signs will be posted, but drivers using the bridge for early morning and evening trips should be ready to go.

Double shooting in Petersburg

The shooting took place just before midnight Wednesday near the intersection of East Wythe Street and Old Wythe Street.

Officers at the scene say one of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Richmond for treatment.

The other victim was treated at a local hospital.

Police are still investigating what led to the shooting and have no suspicious information at this point.

Waiting List for Virtual Virginia Closed

The Richmond Public School District announced it has has cleared the waiting list for Virtual Virginia, the online learning option for all schools in Virginia.

School leaders said there were no more places available for the program and they would no longer accept middle or high school students for the semester.

It could affect thousands of students across the state as countless wait for a place.

Currently, RPS has 2,000 students enrolled in virtual learning programs, and more than 1,400 were waiting for a place to open.

Health Care Provider Protection Act

Senator Tim Kaine urges lawmakers to pass Dr. Lorna Breen’s Healthcare Provider Protection Act, which help protect the mental health of healthcare workers.

The legislation is named in honor of Dr. Lorna Breen, a Charlottesville doctor who committed suicide after fighting on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic in New York City.

Kaine says this legislation would provide more mental health resources and additional funding for mental and behavioral health treatment programs.

The senator says it would also tackle the stigma surrounding mental health in the industry, preventing people from speaking out about their struggles.

Pfizer vaccine data for children aged 5 to 11

Pfizer’s COVID vaccine could soon be available for almost all school-aged children.

The drug company plans to submit data to the Food and Drug Administration on how its injection works in children aged 5 to 11.

According to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, the information should arrive no later than the first week of October.

Pfizer is also collecting data for its vaccine from babies as young as 6 months old and hopes to submit that in the future as well.

McAuliffe and Youngkin to face each other in the first debate

Thursday is a big day for virginia candidates for governor.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin will meet in their first debate.

The debate will take place at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy.

The next debate is scheduled for September 28 in northern Virginia. Virginians can watch this debate on NBC12.

New LOVE sign revealed

A new sign of LOVE has been added to the Cultural Arts Center to Glen Allen.
