Shang-Chi and the legend of ten Ring hitting theaters this month, and critics and audiences both love the film. In honor of the film’s release, ComicBook.com was able to chat with many of the cast and crew, including director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Simu Liu. This week, Adam Barnhardt spoke with Sean Walker, a VFX supervisor at Weta Digital. During the interview, we learned that the Ten Rings are almost totally different, and that the Great Protector Dragon’s eyes are based on those of Fala Chen, who plays Shang’s mother. Speaking of the epic dragons from the movie, the prop department actually built a life-size dragon for Liu to ride.
“We actually had to finish our dragon model before they even started filming. Once we made the model we had, we split it up and created fragmented sets that the crew on set came up with. literally carved an exact replica, a life-size replica, of the top of the dragon’s head, a good chunk of the dragon’s back and all the stunt work. And even the main cast Simu and Meng’er were just hanging it up with son for much of the film, ”Walker revealed.
During the interview, Walker also revealed that one person hand-molded thousands of scales for the dragon.
“It almost killed them, but yes, we had a hand that had placed 8,000 scales on the dragon,” Walker explained. “He actually created the initial sculpture so he wanted to deal with it as a whole, so yeah, we had a modeler who did pretty much all of the dragon. And he modeled each of those scales by hand. “
