New Jersey reported 2,043 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 19 more confirmed deaths on Saturday as the state’s transmission rate continues to rise.
The seven-day average of confirmed positive tests is now 1,905, up 7% from a week ago and 32% from a month ago. The 2,043 cases reported on Saturday also marked the third day in a row with more than 2,000 cases. This had not happened since the end of April.
New Jersey’s statewide transmission rate rose to 1.07 after being at 1.05 for two consecutive days. It was 1 Sunday. Any transmission rate greater than 1 indicates that each new case results in more than one additional case and shows that the state’s epidemic is spreading.
The Delta variant continues to increase in prevalence in New Jersey with 99% of cases sampled in the four weeks ending August 28.
The positivity rate for tests carried out on Monday, the last available day, was 5.14%.
More than 5.7 million people who live, work or study in New Jersey were fully vaccinated on Saturday. More than 6.31 million people have received at least one dose.
All of New Jersey’s 21 counties continue to be listed as having “high” rates of coronavirus transmission, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC recommends that people in 21 counties wear masks for indoor public places, regardless of the state’s immunization rates.

As of Friday evening, 1,132 patients were hospitalized for COVID-19 or suspected cases at 71 New Jersey hospitals, 18 fewer than the night before. There were 143 patients discharged. Hospitalizations have remained at over 1,100 for over a week.
Among those hospitalized, 253 were in intensive care (one more than the day before), including 153 on ventilators (11 more).
New Jersey has now reported a total of 27,182 COVID-19-related deaths in over 17 months – 24,416 confirmed and 2,766 considered probable, according to the state’s dashboard. This is the second highest number of coronavirus deaths per capita in the United States
New Jersey has long been at the top of the list of most COVID-19 deaths per capita, but has recently been eclipsed by Mississippi.
At least 8,505 of the deaths from COVID-19 in the state have occurred among residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, according to state data.
There are active outbreaks in 157 facilities, resulting in 636 current cases among residents and 520 among staff. These numbers have continued to increase in recent weeks.
In total, the state of 9.2 million people has reported 983,947 total confirmed cases out of the more than 15 million PCR tests done since its first case was announced on March 4, 2020. The state also has reported 147,372 positive antigen tests, which are considered probable cases.
As of Saturday, more than 227.8 million positive cases of COVID-19 were reported worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University, with more than 4.68 million people dying from the virus. The United States has reported the most cases (over 42 million) and deaths (over 672,600) than any other country.
More than 5.8 billion doses of vaccines have been administered worldwide.
