Three interceptions, two by sophomore Hunter Campbell, and the first day of receiving 100 yards in senior Tre ‘Leach’s career helped the Lycoming College football team secure a 28-8 victory over King’s College on Saturday in the McCarthy Stadium.
Lycoming’s defense allowed 268 yards on King’s 74 total offensive plays (1-1 overall, 0-1 MAC), but just a safety and a touchdown in the fourth quarter, thanks to the three takeaways. The offense racked up 346 yards on 57 plays, with senior Jersey Shore graduate Elijah Shemory leading with 214 passing yards and one touchdown and 21 rushing yards and one scoring. He was efficient the entire game, 14 out of 20, intercepted once and sacked once.
Junior Joey Guida led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 61 yards and one scoring and junior Kyle Powell rushed eight times for 40 yards and one scoring, while Lycoming carried 37 times for 132 yards. Leach caught three passes for 101 yards, making two connections over 40 yards with Shemory and senior Tyjah Pendant caught five passes for 45 yards and one score.
Junior Cole Senior had eight tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss as well as two rushes and senior Sam Pittsman had eight tackles, 2.5 for a loss, 0.5 sacks and a break. Junior Abubakar Audu Jr. also had eight saves, one for a loss and a half-sack. Junior Kevin Gianoni scored four tackles for the loss of his six and one sack and Campbell had six tackles and two interceptions. Senior Gianni Bryant-Lopez also added a pick.
The game didn’t start off smoothly for the Warriors as an interception and safety ended their first two practices. However, King’s only had two punters, two interceptions and a missed basket to show for his first five practices. The Warriors got on the move in the second quarter when a short punt got the ball rolling at the 45-yard line. Shemory connected with Pendant three times in the span of four games to get the ball to King’s 23 and Lycoming crushed it from there with Shemory scoring from five yards.
A King’s 3-and-out gave the ball to Lycoming with 3:18 left in the half at their own 13. Assists to junior Aaron Wolcott for 21 yards and Leach for 41 got the ball at 19, where Shemory found Pendant for a 19-score in yards with 57 seconds left at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter where King’s gained 34 total yards on 14 plays, the Warriors got the ball to their own 46, and helped by a 34-yard run for senior Chase Cramer, the Warriors scored when Powell was entered the end zone from 25 yards. out, making it 21-2.
King’s went into a nine-play, 71-yard practice late in the half, scoring on a five-yard touchdown pass with 5:51 left. The two-point conversation fell apart, however, leaving 21-8, and the side kick went out of bounds. After a 3-and-out when King’s used it in the last two timeouts, Campbell landed his second pass to King’s 24. On the next play, Guida froze the game with a score of 14 yards.
Tyler Moore had 27 of 41 for 246 yards and one scoring and Quincy Clark led the rushing offense with seven carries for 19 yards for the Monarchs. Tim Costantino caught eight passes for 79 yards and Brandon Cohen caught six passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Brendan Mozeleski led the Monarchs with 12 tackles, 1.5 loss and Tommy Gilmore had an interception.
