SELINSGROVE – Haydn Packer and the Jersey Shore offensive linemen took turns throughout the second half on Saturday night to see who could deal more damage. Packer provided murderous leads and punitive blocks to the line.
Call it a draw.
The full-backs and the line set a physical tone, Jersey Shore executed their no-huddle attack faster than cars in the Daytona 500 and all pieces of an offensive machine fired together throughout the final two quarters of the game. Packer ran for a career-high 129 yards and three touchdowns, the line led the way at 527 yards and Elijah Jordan added two runs as Jersey Shore routed Lewisburg, 47-8 at Harold Bolig Field in Selinsgrove .
The game was moved from Lewisburg to Selinsgrove as Bucknell hosted its Homecoming festivities and Jersey Shore turned the turf into a racetrack and battlefield. The Bulldogs (4-0) made a staggering 97 plays, allowed just 108 yards and pulled away from Lewisburg’s determination with a nearly flawless performance in the second half.
“Once everyone starts working together we start to click and with this quick attack we have it’s hard to stop” Packer said after running for 112 yards in the second half and playing another fantastic linebacker game. “Just hammering football and giving it to them felt good. It felt good to get out of the blocks of Dierk Stetts who blocked that ending so well that it made things easy. All the receivers and slots were holding their blocks for 7-8 seconds, so I couldn’t ask them to do better than that.
Jersey Shore often executes its caucus-less attack faster than a kid during a Sugar Rush talk, but took it to another level on Saturday. The Bulldogs played 51 games in the first half, 46 more in the second half and produced consistent yards all night. The difference between halves was that they completed promising practices that stalled or ended in turnovers within those opening 24 minutes. Jersey Shore has scored touchdowns in four of its last five possessions, scored 20 points in the third quarter and exhausted a team playing for the first time in two weeks.
Jersey Shore averaged 5.4 yards per game and quarterback Brady Jordan threw for 180 yards. The Bulldogs had 29 first downs against four for Lewisburg and played 56 more games, dominating possession time and ultimately the second half.
Stetts, Jared Palski, Zach Rooney, Luke Springman and Donald Steinbacher are all new starters and put in their best performance yet. They exploded the ball, continued to push Lewisburg back, then saw their band of hard-nosed running backs gain yards after contact as they never came down easily.
“We are really working on training. We make every minute count. Everyone gives their all every day ”, said Palski, who also had a bag. “We’ve been playing together since college so we’re used to each other and that helps. “
“Our biggest thing on offense is trying to get as much movement as possible. If they back down, we move forward. said Stetts, who was also key to the defense’s success. “At half time we came in and talked and we knew by the end of the second quarter that they felt it, so we all came out ready to go and shoot the ball.”
They did it. A lot. Packer fed off the line and back and his 15-yard run to the 3-yard line where the state junior linebacker ran over three defensemen lit the fuse He scored a play over late and fanned the flames which quickly turned into hell.
“I just like to hit people” Packer said. “I consider myself more of a defensive player, but I will also try to do everything I can on offense.”
Packer became a blocker on the next touchdown, equalizing a defender and helping to clear the way for Jordan who scored on a 2-yard run. Jordan (85 yards) capped Jersey Shore’s next practice with a 4-yard touchdown and Jersey Shore took a 33-8 lead. Tate Sechrist also ran for a touchdown and Connor Griffin, Cayden Hess, Kooper Peacock and Nick Williams all made big plays in the passing game.
The defending class AAAA champions of the Eastern Region are introducing several new starters, but they are gelding and growing fast. This second half could have been the great breakout performance of this group.
“When we’re out there we know they’re gaining yards because of how hard they’re running and they know we’re getting yards because of our performance, so we just have to stick with what we’re doing. , “ said Stetts. “We have a lot of guns and that’s a great thing. The defense doesn’t know who to turn to, so that helps a lot.
The same goes for the way Jersey Shore conditions itself. The only thing that often slows down no-huddle is the referees spotting the ball. In training, there is no stopping and Jersey Shore plays even more than against Lewisburg. All of that work has paid off over a dominant nine-year span and it did it again on Saturday. Despite the humidity and heat, Jersey Shore strengthened as the game progressed and edged Lewisburg, 289-11 in the final two quarters.
The pace and ferocity brought by Jersey Shore ultimately slowed down Lewisburg, but the Dragons (0-3) seemed capable of causing upheaval throughout the first half. They came close to 7-6 in the first quarter when Wade Young found Owen Ordonez above midfield and watched his tight end do a brilliant jump hold before breaking free for a 68-yard touchdown. Ordonez and Michael Casale then forced an intentional stranding in the end zone for safety as Lewisburg reduced the Jersey Shore lead to 10-8.
The Dragons were aiming for a potential score late in the second quarter, but Griffin ended that threat with an interception and Breck Miller’s 20-yard basket, his second, made it 13-8 at halftime. . Ordonez, an All-State defensive end, was also a defensive threat and had 2 1/2 sacks to go with 12 tackles, including four for loss.
“Coach (Eric) Wicks is going to do really well here at Lewisburg. He represents all the good things. He’s a positive guy and you see so many good things happening in their games on film and you’ve seen him in. first half “, Jersey Shore coach Tom Gravish said. “We challenged our kids at halftime to live up to the occasion. We told them to play hard for 48 minutes and things will work out.
Offense and defense fed off each other throughout the second half as Jersey Shore squeezed the juice out of Lewisburg’s offense. The Bulldogs relentlessly chased Young and suffered five sacks with constant pressure leading to three interceptions. They also eliminated the running game, leaving no running back to gain more than six yards. Take Ordonez’s touchdown and Jersey Shore allowed 40 yards on 40 plays.
The Bulldogs also limited Lewisburg to a yard or less in 16 of the 35 games, not counting the incompleteness, as they played brilliantly in the team’s defense. Griffin, Brady Jordan and Dathan Tyson intercepted passes, Packer recovered a fumble and Luke Springman had 1 1/2 sacks. Jersey Shore won their second game at Harold Bolig Field in three weeks and didn’t allow any second-half points in any of the games, rallying Selinsgrove in week two before taking over after half-time on Saturday.
“We gave everything we could with each game” Palski said. “We don’t leave anything on the ground.
“At the start of half-time I didn’t feel the score was how the game was going” Packer said. “We just had to keep playing and keep hammering that rock until it collapsed.”
